“For Gallantry in Action: The Buick Limited”

Standing at the top for Buick, the Series 80 Limited for 1940 rode on a 133 inch wheelbase and was offered in six body styles, all offering seating for six. The Buick Limited Series received all of Buick’s top appointments, and mechanically competed with, and arguably surpassed the performance of Cadillac. It is rumored that Cadillac executives lobbied behind the scenes for the elimination of the Limited line, as they argued that it interfered with their target market and audience.

As noted in factory brochures “If your taste runs to extreme simplicity of line” The Model 80-C, designated the Sport Phaeton Convertible, stood out against the standard phaeton with an incorporated bustle-back trunk. The Sport Phaeton received a plain downward sweeping back with a smaller luggage compartment. The Sport Phaeton Convertible was available as special-order only. Records indicate that only 7 were produced for 1940, and this is the only known surviving example.

The Buick Limited line would continue for less than two more years, experiencing a shortened production run in 1942 prior to a halt in production due to WWII. It wouldn’t be until 1958 when the Limited namesake would be revived by Buick for its flagship model of the year.
